Review: Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty

After being available as free content in the Welcome Back Package (WBP) of Playstation Network, I sat down and played the game. Check fer ta review mates, or swab the decks Arrrrrrg!

Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty is possibly the most entertaining piece of software you might get your hands on for free (if you downloaded it with PSN-WBP) or at the small price its at. The game was released in 2008 by Insomniac Games, the creators of Resistance and delivers a small piece of story about what happened between the games of the series.

The Story

*Spoilers from Tools of Destruction, pass the story if you haven't played the game and want to keep it unspoiled*

In the end of  Tools of Destruction we see Clank being abducted by the mysterious Zoni after the defeat of Emperor Tachyon. We find our hero Ratchet and Talwyn on a quest to find Captain Darkwater, an expert on Zoni culture and possibly where Ratchet could find Clank. And that's where you enter.

The game makes a link between Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time, to explain the events of what happened between those two times. You will see familiar faces like the Smuggler and a villain who you thought was gone as well as all the previous weapons you had in Tools of Destruction.

The Good

Face skeletons, bugs and really painful voice acting if your not in an English country
- Instant Fun - Ratchet and Clank games are always instant fun for whatever age you have. Don't worry about the colorful background nor the kid designs, these types of game are slowly dying and really need to make a comeback.
- Fluid - The game is very fluid and whatever place your in you will either have to smack some baddies for bolts and nuts, solve a puzzle or go through a platform course, so no dull moments for you.
- Low Price - The game (if you didn't have the WBP) is cheap for what the game actually is, so if you didn't got the game already, what are you waiting for?
- For all Ages - Like I said before, this game is for all the ages, there isn't anything wrong with whacking robots, the learning curve is seriously small and you or your children will have no problem on getting the controls to play.
- The Graphics - The game is loyal to the series and presents us with a cartoonish environment very beautiful to look at and very rich in detail.
- Music - The music is really into the theme of the game, it will make you remember a certain Pirates of the Caribbean, so it's all good and really enjoyable to listen.

The Bad
Don't worry Ratchet, it's not really that bad!
- No Re-playability - You will find out that, after you finished the game, you want to know more about what happens next and go and buy Crack in Time instead of replaying the game. The puzzles are easy to solve for the age of 18+ so you won't see yourself playing the game.
- Language Locked - Maybe this is just a quirk of mine, but I love games with the English language, where they were made at least (Yes, even Japanese with English subtitles) so I gotta say that this is probably a bad thing for me, I hated passing Tools of Destruction in Portuguese and I hated passing Quest for Booty in the same language, so give us an option where you can put the language we want to hear and the subtitles we want to see in. Don't get me wrong though I support the translation to other languages, but only if it comes with that option.
- Very Quick to End - Despite its good value, the game will be very easy to finish (if your 18+) and you will find out that even at a low price the game was sold, you won't play the game again, for some time anyway.
- Retail just doesn't cut it - I wouldn't recommend the retail version of the game for whatever price its at, it will just occupies a space you might need later on in your proud library and if you think of selling it, the price is re-sell is extremely low so you might just keep it. This of course is easily forgiven if you are a collector of game and hate to sell anything that you bought.

Conclusion

All in all, Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty, will show you and your friends, family a good time. It's easy and the story for its short length very enjoyable. Despite the few problems I found about it (and they were very easily forgiven) the game is too good to pass and you should buy it if you are going to start playing the Ratchet & Clank games.

Addict3d Score: 8/10 - Buy it, you won't be disappointed by what you will purchase.
